1. Exercise Yudh Abhyas-23

Current Context: The 19th edition of “Exercise Yudh Abhyas” is scheduled to be conducted from 25th September to 8th October 2023 in Alaska, USA.

About Exercise Yudh Abhyas

• It is an annual exercise conducted jointly by the Indian Army and the United States Army.
• The previous edition of the Exercise was conducted in Uttarakhand, India in November 2022.
• The Yudh Abhyas is a 15-day-long exercise, first started in 2002 and is undertaken by the armies of both countries to promote defence cooperation.
• The theme of the Exercise is ‘Employment of an Integrated Battle Group in Mountain/ Extreme Climatic Conditions’ under Chapter VII of United Nations mandate.
• A Command Post Exercise and Expert Academic Discussions on selected topics will also form part of the schedule.

Objective

• Yudh Abhyas is an annual joint military session on warfare-related activities between Army of India and the United States.
• The Exercise will entail exchanging best practices and enhancing interoperability to mutually learn from each other and strengthen the bond between the two Armies.

2. The Maiden Trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise

Current Context: The Indian Navy's indigenously built warship INS Sahyadri has participated in the maiden trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise with the ships and aircraft from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Indonesian Navy.

About the Exercise:

• The trilateral exercise provided an opportunity for the three maritime nations to strengthen their partnership and improve their collective capability to support a stable, peaceful, and secure Indo-Pacific region for the first time. 
• The exercise also provided the opportunity for the participating navies to benefit from each other's experience and expertise.
• Complex tactical and manoeuvring exercises, cross-deck visits, and cross-deck landings of integral helicopters were conducted to train crew and enhance interoperability.

About INS Sahyadri: 

• INS Sahyadri, the third ship of the indigenously designed and built under Project-17 class multirole stealth frigates was built at Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai, and is commanded by Captain Rajan Kapoor.

Others exercises between India and Australia:

• Exercise Pitch Black: It is a biennial multilateral air combat exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) since 1981. Indian Air Force had taken first participation in the exercise in 2018.
• Exercise Austra Hind: It is a bilateral training exercise between the Indian Army and the Australian Army.
• AUSINDEX: It is a biennial bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

 Others exercises between India and Indonesia:

• Ind-Indo Corpat: It is a bi-annual coordinated naval patrol exercise conducted by the Indian and Indonesian Navy.
• Exercise Garuda Shakti: It is an annual military exercise between the Indian and Indonesian Army. 
• Exercise Samudra Shakti: It is a bilateral maritime exercise between India and Indonesia.
